Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north; Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the northeast; and New Zealand to the southeast.

The placement of humans in Australia allegedly began at 42,000 to 48,000 years ago, possibly with the movement of people by land bridges and short range sea-crossings from what is now known as South East Asia.
