Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic states - and the largest and most populous of them. Lithuania was the first occupied Soviet republic to break free from the Soviet Union and restore sovereignty via the declaration of independence on March 11, 1990.

Lithuania dominated scenery flat, with a few low hills in the western uplands and eastern highlands. The highest point is at 294 meters Aukštasis. Lithuania has 758 rivers, more than 2800 lakes and 99 miles from the coast of the Baltic Sea, which is largely devoted to recreation and nature conservation. Forests cover more than 30% of the country.

Some 84% of the population is ethnically Lithuanian. The second biggest is the Polish minority, which numbers more than 6% of the population, and Russia, which makes up more than 5%. Lithuanian language belongs to the Indo-European language family.

The capital, Vilnius, is a picturesque town on the banks of the river Neris and Vilnia, and architecture in the old part of town are some of the best Eastern Europe. Vilnius university, founded in 1579, is a complex of Renaissance style with an inner courtyard countless, forming a city within a city.
