Laos People's Democratic Republic is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Burma and People's Republic of China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south and Thailand to the west. From the 14th century until the 18th century, this state is called Lan Xang or "Land of a Thousand Elephants". Laos is a country oppressed by the Southeast Asian mainland and the most thick mountain forests, one of which is Phou Bia 2,817 m the highest altitude above sea level. Laos also has some plains and plateaus. The Mekong River forms a large part of the western boundary with Thailand, whereas the mountains of the Annamite Chain form most of the eastern border with economic Vietnam. generally hampered by a number of educated citizens who move abroad because of the unavailability of enough jobs. The single Parliament in the 1997 election expanded to 99 members, approves all new laws, although the executive branch retains authority to issue binding decrees. Latest elections held in February 2002 when the National Assembly expanded to 109 members and from history we can see that there is a historical place in the laos
