Laos People's Democratic Republic is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Burma and People's Republic of China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south and Thailand to the west. From the 14th century until the 18th century, this state is called Lan Xang or "Land of a Thousand Elephants". The single Parliament in the 1997 election expanded to 99 members, approves all new laws, although the executive branch retains authority to issue binding decrees.
